Leaving Certificate

All students study Maths, English, Gaeilge and French or Spanish. They then choose 3 of the following options.
History, Geography, Accounting, Economics, Business, Art, Music, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Enterprise Education, Home Economics.

History

  • Studied at Higher and Lower levels
  • Topics will be taken from Irish History, European and the Modern World
  • Case Studies will be undertaken (20%)

Geography

  1. Economic Geography or Social Geography
  2. Physical Geography
  3. Regional Geography - Ireland, Europe, World.
  4. More detailed study of Map Reading.
  5. Field study will be undertaken.

Music

  • The Leaving Certificate music exam consists of three sections:
  1. Practical
  2. Written
  3. Aural
  • Three classical works are studied in detail with harmony and counterpoint
  • If students participate in the school choir, this can be integrated into the practical part of their exam
  • The practical, which amounts to 50% of the exam, allows students to get recognition-vocal or instrumental or a combination.

Accounting

  • A more advanced treatment of the Junior Cert. Book-keeping course.

Chemistry

  • The Leaving Certificate course covers the following sections:
  1. Atoms, Periodic Table of elements, chemical bonding
  2. Acid/Base reactions
  3. Gases
  4. Radioactivity
  5. Environmental Chemistry-Water/Greenhouse effect
  6. Study of organic chemistry e.g. acohols, production of soap, extraction of clove oil from cloves
  • Chemistry requires an average mathematical ability, logical thinking and a general interest in science.

Biology

The course covers topics such as:

  • Cell structure and division
  • Plant and Animal Kingdoms e.g. amoeba
  • All human systems e.g digestive
  • Psychological processes in plants e.g. photosynthesis
  • Microbiology-bacteria, fungi, viruses
  • Genetics-inheritance of characteristics/evolution, genetic engineering, DNA profiling
  • Reproduction and development-Plants and Animals
  • Bioprocessing and waste management

Physics

  • Topics include:
  1. Light
  2. Sound
  3. Mechanics
  4. Heat
  5. Electricity
  6. Modern Physics e.g. X-rays, nuclear physics, electronics

Business

  • Business attempts to explain important aspects of business life and every day living
  • Areas covered include:
  1. Finance
  2. Management
  3. Taxation
  4. Insurance, etc.

All students have a career guidance class and religious education classes.
